

About Raouf Rifai
Raouf Rifai, born in Lebanon in 1954, is an award-winning figurative and abstract painter. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Decorative Art from the Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut in 1982 and later obtained a PhD in Urbanism from the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1995.
His work, deeply rooted in Middle Eastern history and heritage, reflects the complexity of human civilization and societal transitions. Through vibrant colours and bold compositions, Rifai explores themes of identity, instability, and cultural evolution, incorporating elements of impressionism and expressionism.
Artistic Vision
Rifai’s art captures the psychology, drama, and ever-changing nature of the region. A recurring motif in his work is the darwich, a dynamic figure representing the rich and layered social realities of the Middle East. Through these characters, Rifai conveys a broad spectrum of emotions, from sorrow and fear to joy and celebration.
Achievements and Recognition
Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Rifai has received numerous accolades, including first prize at the Sursock Museum’s 2010 Salon d’Automne in Beirut. His work has been exhibited in 70 public collections and featured in 120 solo exhibitions, international biennales, and prestigious auctions across the Middle East, Europe, the US, and Asia.
His artworks are part of significant public and private collections, including national museums, banks, and universities worldwide.
Beyond Art
Alongside his artistic practice, Rifai has contributed to academia, teaching at the Department of Architecture and Design at the Lebanese University. He also serves as Vice President of the Association of Lebanese Artists.
